
As we continue to work our way through February and recognize the importance of heart healthy behaviors through movement, we wanted to add a few recipes to complement the physical piece of your health. Now is the perfect time to focus on nourishing your body with foods that support cardiovascular wellness.
🥑 Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon
This simple yet nutritious breakfast is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and healthy fats that support heart health.
Ingredients:
1 slice whole-grain bread
½ avocado, mashed
2 oz smoked salmon
1 tsp lemon juice
Black pepper & red pepper flakes to taste
Instructions:
Toast the bread until golden brown.
Spread mashed avocado on top.
Layer with smoked salmon.
Drizzle with lemon juice and sprinkle with pepper.
Enjoy!
🍓 Heart-Healthy Berry Smoothie
Loaded with antioxidants and fiber, this smoothie is perfect for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up.
Ingredients:
½ cup blueberries
½ cup strawberries
½ banana
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tbsp flaxseeds
½ tsp cinnamon
Instructions:
Blend all ingredients until smooth.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
🥜 Dark Chocolate & Almond Energy Bites
Ingredients:
1 cup oats
½ cup almond butter
¼ cup dark chocolate chips
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp chia seeds
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients in a bowl until well combined.
Roll into small bite-sized balls.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before enjoying.
Add protein powder to increase your protein needs!
And one of my personal favorites:
🥗Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet
Ingredients:
2 T. olive oil
1 T. garlic, minced
1 lb. ground turkey
1.5 T ground cumin
1 t. chili powder
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper
1 c. diced onion
1 yellow pepper
3 c. peeled and diced sweet potatoes
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shredded mozzarella
Instructions:
Heat large skillet over med-high heat. Add oil and garlic. Cook for 1 min.
Add the ground turkey. Cook until browned.
Add seasonings. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook for an additional 3-4 min.
Add the sweet potatoes and water. Stir and cover until softened for 6-8 min. Add additional water if needed to keep meat from drying out.
Add additional salt and pepper if desired.
Top with mozzarella, allowing to melt. Remove from heat and serve.
